Artificial Intelligence is commonly defined as the simulation of human intelligence through machines and computers. The use of AI is growing immensely in our constantly advancing societies, and humans need to know where to set the boundaries when it comes to the capabilities and power that we attribute to machines.
Humans are the most advanced species on our planet. We have found a way to modify and control the environment around us. For example, we can domesticate animals, cultivate plants and alter natural materials for our use. This rapidly accelerating rate of discoveries and innovations have allowed us to build things on an entirely different scale than any other known species. Because of this, both population and wealth have risen immensely.
So far, we have found a way to integrate all of the inventions that have come with the progression of our species. There is a lot of fear around whether or not the relentless pace of human innovation can destroy our current level of society (the interface between intelligence and what it was like before). Creativity and curiosity are human instincts, and therefore we will never stop innovating and discovering. Because of this, we have to learn that we cannot compete with or overpower machines, we have to control them. With this great capability, we have to find suitable and effective ways to integrate technology into society.
AI is so all-encompassing that it will no longer be referred to as the new technology, but as the new economy. It will impact every aspect of our lives. This can be illustrated through the fact that GDP in the U.K. is predicted to raise by 10.3% by 2030 solely due to improvement in AI. This is because artificial intelligence uses predictions to be able to respond to many variables and learn what a human would do in certain situations. It can closely replicate the human decision-making process. Experts break up tasks to find out what aspects of this task can be replaced with AI, and which ones will still need to rely on humans, although this amount is rapidly decreasing. This is why it is vital to remember that machine intelligence is a tool for prediction, but will never be able to replace human judgement. Humans and AI need to work in harmony. If AI technology was responsible for everything, it would make decisions for us, and eventually take over our society without us even realizing it. Essentially, we would no longer be controlling the machines, but the machines would be controlling us.
It is vital to recognize and understand that the pace of invention is only accelerating. We have to look for opportunities and do our best to keep discovering and innovating in order to keep developing the world. At the same time, we need to remember that the machines work best under our control and if the balance between human and artificial intelligence was altered, the effects could be disastrous.
